Secret Areas in Video Games: The Signs and Clues

Secret Areas in Video Games can be as hard to find than a good game at a pawn shop, but know that finding these types of areas are essential to the survival of the main character(s) in the game. Interestingly, it is without question that secret areas hold some of the most priceless gems (for lack of a better word) in that particular video game.

Ben 10 Alien Force

For example, burning the logs in the background in the suburb area on the level Bad Eggs using Swampfire in Ben 10 Alien Force will reveal a secret area that has an Alien Tech Power Up that’ll strengthen the power of the Omnitrix which will help Ben stay in his alien forms longer. Some games draw you a map of sorts using objects that’ll point you to where the secret area is.

Generally, it is not hard to find hidden passageways or alcoves; all it takes is a trained eye while paying attention to the clues that point to that secret location in the game. Without further ado, here are the clues and signs of secret areas in video games.

Pay Attention the Clues

Looking for secret areas in video games can be as easy as pie; the secret, the clues. The way to find anything hidden lies in the clues that are given in game, but some clues are not as obvious to decipher. If you get a clue that points you in a certain direction, read that clue again and again; doing so will tell you exactly what to look out for.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

You’ll need to do this if and when you play Odin Sphere Leifthrasir because it is the only way to find the hidden psypher skills. A specific example is – Near the Endpoint Where the Snowmen Stare – so what does this mean, you’re looking for Snowmen to find this psypher skill; where, Winterhorn Ridge!

Adhere to objects that make a line or a shape of sorts, it’ll lead you to the discovery of a bonus item like in Ben 10: Protector of Earth. Use your aliens to find certain secret locations in Ben 10 Alien Force; doing so will lead you to riches untold i.e. Omnitrix boosting items that’ll increase the amount of energy restoration for the Omnitrix. You should also give special attention to objects that glow in Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Cosmic Destruction because those objects often lead to special areas as well.

Run Right then Left

Finding secret areas in video games will often lead the gamer to two different paths; one to the right and one to the left. The thing is, either one of them could lead to a secret area or a hidden location where an item awaits. Pick a path and work your way through it until you either end up at a dead end or the exit out of the area, but don’t leave the area.

Go back and explore the path you didn’t because ten times out of ten, that’s the secret area and/or a location where a hidden item awaits; turn over everything because you could miss something that you need. It is important to go one way until you can’t then retrace your steps and go the other way; the benefit is that you’ll end up finding something of value whether it’s a secret area or a hidden item.

Although there are games that do not have secret areas, secrets leading to items/weapons are still considered secret. Don’t be so quick to run in one direction or straight ahead because it is the only available path because you’ll run the risk of missing out on that level’s secret. Unmoot Point: Pay Attention!

Don’t Rush, Take your Time

Rushing through an area can destroy any chance of discovering secret areas in video games, it is important to take your time when you’re exploring because you’ll miss out on something valuable. For example, carefully exploring every inch of Zio’s Fort (first visit) in Phantasy Star IV, will put you on the path to black hole zones i.e. secret areas. Go down these and you’ll find a weapon and shield protection; there’s one on the left and right respectively.

Also, there are games such as the first Castlevania Lords of Shadow game for the PS3 that reward patience. Items will reveal themselves to you when you take your time especially when you’re looking for items in heavily wooded areas and if you look for off colored items or objects, you’ll often discover a secret area as well.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

Take baby steps while you’re exploring levels where there is everything and nothing, it also helps to use your weapon on some of the background items because it can be the biggest sign that’ll point you to that secret area of the level.

The Map is the Thing

Drakan: The Ancients' Gate

One of the biggest trials of finding secret areas in video games is following the map in order to advance the story in some games, but what if you decided to go to other locations that are not story driven and if that’s the case then don’t obey the map. For example, in Drakan: The Ancients’ Gate, you’re given specific locations on where to go when you get to the Andrellian Isles.

Use the map to find other locations on the map especially if they are not lit up or important because that’s a sign that it is a secret area with a valuable item such as an in game item that is needed to progress later on in the story.

Conclusion

Secret Areas in Video Games will always have clues and signs that’ll point you to where it or they are, but it takes careful attention on your part which you can do by running right then left; exploring both paths. Pay attention to the clues because the information is the key to getting to the secret area, don’t rush, take your time and above all use the map to find other locations that are not important to the story.

  1. Interesting article. Even though I’m not huge into games, I do love the Call of Duty games, and I like to go on youtube and look at cool places to go and ways to avoid inevitable death. What game console is this article more geared towards or is this just for all game in general?

    1. This is geared more toward games in general, secret areas are everywhere and that includes where weapons might hide in those areas; you could be walking and pass up a Rocket Launcher in a bush or under a damaged rail car; secret areas are simply places that can and usually does hide items.

  2. Hi. I had no idea there were even secret areas in a video game. You learn something new every day. I’m not real good with games but I am trying to find a good one for my grandson who has just turned ten years of age. Do you think that Castle Vania would interest a boy that from that age group. if not, is there any other game you could suggest.  Thanks Jim,

    1. Castlevania is a great game to start him off with; I played my first Castlevania game when I was 9 years old and I was really into it. Now, I have a whole wealth of tips for just about every Castlevania game off the top of my head and I’ve played a majority of every Castlevania game out there so depending on which one you want to get him, I’d be able to give strategies based on that game.

Yes, there are secret areas in just about every game; its not unheard of to be standing right on top of a secret passage to another part of a level; they exist in Castlevania games as well. Feel free to reach out to me, I’d be willing to help your grandson anyway I can if he runs into any trouble in the game.

Here’s a hint, secret areas usually exist in rooms or areas where there is very little of nothing or something that makes the room stand out or it could even be a enemy room ratio i.e. if there is only one enemy in a room.
