Okay, so killing mercenaries in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has become an obligatory duty because they will not stop coming after you until they kill you or you kill them. When you’re playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Killing Mercenaries, you have to remember that they can be relentless and can be tipped as well as paid off by their sponsors so if you get/got a chance, and I suggest you take advantage of it, kill the sponsors.

Now, there’ll be sponsors all over the map that you will and will not be able to reach either because of time convenience or distance, but if you’re looking to keep that trailing mercenary off your back then again I say, KILL THE SPONSOR!! But, what if you can’t kill the sponsor or are unable to stay out of the mercenary’s line of fire; you’ll have no choice but to fight them.

Killing the Sponsor temporarily solves the problem!

But, I can say that there are different approaches to killing mercenaries, one of them is luring and driving them off of a high rooftop to plummet to their death below. Another is trying to match them strength for strength. However, what if there was another more conventional way of killing them that doesn’t require a lot of strength but brains but I’ll discuss that more in detail in this post.

Use the Bow and Arrow

Now, over the course of your adventure, you’re going to master the skill Arrow Mastery. Mastering this skill as soon as possible is paramount in taking down mercenaries. Hence my primary tip, use your bow and arrow. While it is easy to get face to face with the mercenary to cleave them to bits, it’s not always an option but sometimes you may find that you’re just delaying the inevitable because even if that mercenary is alone with you, it is not uncommon for the town guards to join in on the fun.

And this is handy when you’re feeling outnumbered and need some space between the mercenary, town guards and you. The bow and arrow(s) are your out especially your explosive arrows because they are explosive, they have the ability to knock your opponents back and burn them up at the same time. Just make sure you have plenty of Olive Wood and Soft Leather or Leather, you’ll be crafting arrows quite often.

Above all, use your bow and arrow and maneuver around between place to place. A good weapon to use is the Hades Bow which turns your basic arrows into automatic fire arrows. Use every arrow except the paralyzing arrow because the paralyzing arrow doesn’t do anything at all except deal damage.

Strategic Planning and Use

One of the best strategies that I use when it comes to using the Bow and Arrow on Mercenaries is to get up on a roof high in the air, an altitude that they can and cannot reach you. Let me explain, some mercenaries will see you and come up onto the rooftop or wherever you are to confront you, some of them won’t but will take their time in coming up after you. The best strategy is to use your fire and explosive arrows on them to get the damage ball rolling.

She has a helper animal, deal with it before dealing with her!

The rationale, they could be traveling with a companion/helper animal and in that instant, kill the helper animal first because there’s no reason for you to take unnecessary damage from them if you don’t have to. So perch atop a roof or somewhere out of the way where the helper animal can’t get you then launch arrows at them until they die or use your Hero Strike or Overpower Attack to incapcitate them.

All in all, using your bow and arrow on mercenaries from a distance will help you get and keep the advantage especially when you’re trying to conserve health while taking on or out one mercenary before trying to turn your attention to another.

Master this skill and improve on it i.e. Arrow Mastery

I mentioned Arrow Mastery and mastering it, but when you get ability points, you can apply them to a skill of your choosing or improve on a skill that you already mastered. Putting ability points toward Arrow Mastery will allow you to unlock more powerful special arrows. Make no mistake, you’ll get to use Poison, Fire and Explosive arrows. These are handy for taking out mercenaries and people as a whole.

Poison Arrows, when used, will cause damage to your opponent overtime and they will continue to take damage from the poison; use at least 3-5 to get the ball rolling. Fire and explosive arrows are the exact same way, use them in like manner to get the desired effect. Improving on Arrow Mastery will give you access to these arrows; I wouldn’t even take on or even face any of the late game mercenaries without mastering this ability completely

The reason, you’ll be in much better shape to face mercenaries especially the ones that do not let you get close enough to them to land a physical blow; there are some mercenaries that will keep dodging you and not let you get a hit and that’s when you pull out your bow and arrow and fire on them mercilessly.

Advice i.e. Second Wind lv. 2 and Hero Strike lv. 2

This hardly goes without saying but, your second wind ability gives you the power to heal from nicks and scrapes of every kind. Your Hero Strike is a power move that’s used to throw your enemies off their game and deal damage to them. You’d do well to get both of these abilities to level 2 and beyond, the max being three because they have extra effects that you can benefit from.

For example, take the Second Wind ability. When you max it out at Lv. 3, you’ll be able to heal and if you’re poisoned or on fire, second wind will cure both of these effects. Hero Strike will just, when you max it out, will let you hit for more damage per hit. This is handy when you need to hurry and end a mercenary especially if you’re low on health and need to recover.

But, you are to get both of the aforementioned skills up to level 2 as soon as possible because the sooner you do the longer you live and the more quickly you can heal and counterattack. Sometimes, it’s not going to always be easy following this but it is a necessary evil in order to destroy the mercenaries coming after you.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is fraught with mercenaries and dangers around every corner but you have the skills, Second Wind and Hero Strike in order to send a message to those mercenaries that you are not to be trifled with. Arrow Mastery is another skill that you should master as soon as possible because getting a strategic advantage over your opponent in battle is one of the biggest trophies you can get.

Above all, your bow and arrow are you saving grace when you’re facing mercenaries that are dodging you and are not giving you a chance to land a hit. But remember to take out their helper animal, you don’t need an added nuisance. So what do you think of my post, good, bad, or lacking. Leave me a message and I’ll get back to you immediately. Thank you and Happy gaming.

  1. Henry Henry

Hi! I really appreciate you’re sharing your tips. I can see you have been playing this game for a long time. And the idea of killing a mercenary is challenging for me and that’s why I started doing a bit of research. The tip of using the exploding arrow will definitely be very useful. I hope to see the text: “Mercenary defeated” soon! Thank you very much!

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

You will Henry, but here’s some advice if you’re taking on a mercenary in a wide open area with guards butting their nose in. Lure the mercenary away from everyone else then take them on alone using your power moves so you can end them quickly. This way, you can deal with any further opposition that comes your way.

  2. Rodarrick Rodarrick

  3. Nick Nick

Thanks Rodney for sharing your post Assassin’s Creed Odyssey killing mercenaries, part 2 with us. I have not yet played this amazing game but to be honest your article has spiked my interest in playing it as soon as I get my hands on it.

And yes, your post is not just good its quite helpful. I will surely apply the startegies shared by you in this post and will get back to you at the first instance, to let you know about my progress. Do you know roughly how long should it take for me to master the Arrow Mastery skill?

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Arrow Mastery, it can be among the first skills you master shortly after beginning the game but be careful because learning too much too soon could come back and bite you like not having enough arrow ammo to get the damage ball rolling when you fight the mercs, but you can learn Arrow Mastery early. Do it, and tell me what happens; I didn’t master it until close to the mid game.

  4. John John

Lol, this is a very nice post and your tips on killing the mercenaries is really great. I enjoy taking them all the way to the roof top because it’s kind of like the best way to let them killed for me. I think that maybe I should try out using the bow and arrow. Would be a really good experience for me.

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Indeed. It’s okay to switch up your strategy when taking on the mercenaries, but remember too that there is no one single strategy that end mercenaries but employing all of them will give you a cacophony of strategies on destroying the mercs. I’m interested in what your strategy will be when you take on the next merc, tell me about your strategy.

  5. Willy Willy

This is a very entertaining and interesting article I must say and the assassin’s creed odyssey has been a very interesting experience. The challenge there base been with killing the mercenaries in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey it has not just become an obligatory duty but an uneasy experience because they keep coming after you until they kill you or until you kill them I really enjoyed this article and guides..they are amazing. Thanks

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Thanks Willy, look upon my expertise and advice in my article and you’ll prevail and keep the mercenaries off your back. If I’m being completely honest, even the top tier mercenary needs a break from fighting every now and then.

  6. Dane Dane

Hello there, thanks for sharing this wonderful post. I have been drown in playing FIFA my whole life. Yes I love games, but I hardly only them on my PC, most time I only play action game when I’m invited to. Looking at the description you gave concerning this post, I’ll love to try it out. I love thee idea of having to plan your strategy. Nice game you have here.

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Thanks Dane, try the game, you’ll like it.

  7. SeunJeremiah SeunJeremiah

Thanks for this interesting post Assassins creed Odyssey is one of my favorite adventure game and sometimes very challenging. The mercenary and bounty systems add a dynamic and challenging element to the game, and the mercenaries you encounter can be looted for top-tier gear and recruited as high value Lieutenants. The bow and arrow tip is something I haven’t taught about, I’ll try it now and decrease the bounty on me already.

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Awesome. Kill those sponsors, they’re who hire the mercenaries and when their ‘light’ go out, the mercenary is walking around in the dark i.e. trying to find you. Rock on!

  8. Shelley Shelley

This is great to see the review about this game. Assassins creed: odyssey. Though I have Ben following all the news about it but I never truly deemed it fit to check it out since its release. Well! This review has convinced me to give this a chance too. If for anything, I like the dynamism attached to this game. I’m definitely giving a chance to this game. Thanks

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

You should, you’re missing out not giving it a chance. The game isn’t as hard as it might appear, it’s just you have a lot of running around to do which is fine because a game get boring when you’re spending more than a few days in an area. So definitely give this game a shot.

  9. Simon Simon

Great post. when i kill the sponsors i send ikaros in to harass 2-4 times and they die, that way no one sees me and i don’t have to worry about getting seen. this way can get a little boring tho. i think it suck that kick don’t work on the stronger mercenary when im on a roof tho, some are just impossible to knock down.

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Yeah, I’ve encountered that myself recently and here’s a tip, use your Overpower Attack (physical) on them and if they get knocked back a ways then that’ll tell you that they can be driven off the roof; I’ve been watching after that too. Also, don’t forget to use your Sparta Kick, that’s usually tells the tale too. Get at me if you have any problems.

  10. Henderson Henderson

Thank you for adding that awesome video that you added here. I read your part one since you posted it and your tips alhave really helped my gaming to improve. To be honest, there was a time that I was about to get tired of playing the game. Your tips are really great and I will make sure I explore using that bow and arrow. Thanks!

    • Rodney McGill Rodney McGill

Thanks buddy, I’m glad that my gaming expertise can help you and if I’m being honest here, those mercenaries will take it out of you but with the bow and arrow you have more ranged options on taking them down and without succumbing to their attacks. Play on brother!
