When storming an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Fortress, you might feel inclined to run around killing everything that walks which is fine because that’s the protocol lest the Spartans make your life difficult which they are capable of doing. I’ve ran the gauntlet several times throughout the game and even though killing all of the Spartans within their fortress is key to finding the collectibles there in peace, you’re going to run into hardship no matter how much you try to avoid it.
The hardship is in the form of the brazier that gets lit by some unidentified Spartan that alerts their comrades to your presence or alerts them to the fact that there’s an intruder running around about the grounds. There are ways to avoid this, but more on that later. You’ll face the same thing when you storm an Athenian Fort and the result is more likely the same, you’re bogged down fighting off guard after guard trying to decrease their numbers.
Killing everyone in the fort is the goal but what happens when you get so caught up in your killing that you forget an important item which is likely to happen especially if you knock, say, a Spartan polemarch off a cliff thousands of feet below, it can cause problems which I’ll discuss in this post.
So as you may or may not know, many an Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Fortress will be filled to the brim with enemies and fortress protocol is usually kill everything that rushes you and loot the corpses after everything that was moving is no longer. Yes, you are to kill everyone in the fortress you storm, that’s your job! However, if you’re doing Demosthenes’ sidequest of getting him the Spartan Seals then you do not want to make the mistake of kicking the polemarch off of a cliff.
The greatest feature of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is that you get to lie in wait and plan while using Ikaros to “highlight” certain enemies via X button. So naturally, secure the Spartan Seal first which means find and kill the polemarch. My advice, find the polemarch and take him out silently via silent assassination and make sure he’s away from anyone that could draw attention to you.
If you find that you can’t get the polemarch away from any of his comrades then a backup plan is definitely necessary but more times than not, if you kill the polemarch while his comrade’s back is turned or even get him alone then it’s better to do that and here’s….
What you need you to do and how to go about it
Ultimately, when you’re running through either Spartans or Athenians within any of the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Fortress areas, you’ll want to make it as easy as possible. One of the best ways of going about it is to use Ikaros to find the brazier and make a race toward it, climb the wall on the side where the brazier is then get up the wall killing anyone in your way. This is something you have to do to make the going easier because if you allow anyone to light the brazier then what’s going to happen is every Spartan or Athenian will come from miles around just to get in on the action i.e. getting a piece of you.
To put a finer point on this, mercenaries, most times 2-4 of them at a time will also respond to the “summons”, for lack of a better term and trying to fight everyone off at once is Ill-advised and just tiring. The objective here is to be silent and quick with killing the d-bag at the brazier. Station yourself by the brazier and just pelt all of the soldiers with either fire, explosive or death arrows.
You just want to make sure that you’re using Ikaros to find the brazier so you don’t have to deal with too much opposition, there’s nothing wrong with playing smart.
What you don’t want to do
One of the biggest mistakes, and yes, I’m guilty of this too, trying to fight your way to the brazier and hope that you can get the numbers down, I.e. kill your enemies before the “signaler” lights the brazier. This is the wrong strategy and definitely one you do not want to implement because if you’re going to survive then the key is making sure that you kill the signaler and/or make your way to the brazier without signaling anyone.
How I used to do it is use the Rush Assassination ability to get the jump on the Spartans and Athenians to start a combo chain which would allow me to take out a third of their ranks. However, this is one of the quickest ways to get caught and get the brazier lit because your cover is blown. I even tried going through every single enemy on the bottom before ascending to the brazier but incidentally, it is not ideal because even then you’re still likely to get attention from many of the neighboring mercenaries.
It is imperative that you use Rush Assassination on the signaler so you can stop him and anyone near him from lighting the brazier, you don’t want to get overwhelmed during any run you make in any Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Fortress
Now, spending as much time as I have gutting and killing all of the Spartan as well as Athenian Soldiers, I’ve stressed the importance of making a race toward the brazier and using Ikaros to “highlight” the brazier so you can make your way to it. Ready for an additional strategy? Once you’re standing by the brazier, use your explosive arrows combined with your Overpower Bow Strike to deal lethal damage to your enemies trying to come through the door trying to get at you. This’ll trigger automatic knockback to enemy ranks and deal lethal fire damage. Case in point, check out my video.
As you well know, using the explosive arrows will deal continuous fire damage to your enemies which means that the more you fire at them or on them, the likely the chance that they’ll die quicker. Doing this also fills up your overpower meter i.e. yellow meter and I’m telling you now, use an axe preferably the Minotaur’s Labrys (which is my go to) and use the R1 + R2 move to start flinging the opposition off the tower.
The best part about this strategy is that when you use an Axe weapon, you’re less likely to be knocked back when you’re attacking normally and axes deal almost 1.5x normal damage. Axes are ideal weapons to use on Mercenaries and crowd control.
Anytime you’re running through any Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Fortress, you’re going to feel like killing everything that moves which is fine, i.e. fortress protocol as I call it. However, the goal is getting up to the brazier and safeguarding it using Ikaros to “highlight” the precise locale of the brazier. Fighting your way through wave after wave to the brazier is not ideal but climbing the wall, using an Axe weapon along with your overpower move and your overpower bow strike to break up the masses and deal lethal damage will win you the day.
So what do you think of my post, what your thoughts on storming the various fortresses in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, what have you tried that has and has not worked? Leave me a message and I’ll get back to you immediately. Thank you and Happy gaming.
